The Phoenix Trio was formed in 2005 when Peter Trueman (piano/composer), Mike Whitehead (bass) and Bill Wills (drums) met up again after many years. With time on their hands and their enthusiasm for modern jazz undiminished, they started rehearsing and performing again. Since then the trio have developed into an ensemble by the permanent addition of tenor saxophonist ‘Relentless’ Roger Mason and exciting new vocalist Nette Robinson.

The recent Jazz Cafe concert entitled "Salute to Bill Evans" at the Quay Arts Centre Newport was an outstanding success - a complete sellout.  The discerning audience greatly appreciated the narration of the life of Bill Evans by Mike Whitehead and the compositions of Evans and Peter Trueman.  Island born Nette Robinson travelled from London especially for this concert and she received a standing ovation.  A limited edition DVD of the concert is now available (phone 523879 -there is only 1 left!)

They have supported emerging Island Jazz talent by hosting jam sessions at the Quay Arts Centre, Newport, where they also back visiting artists of the calibre of Tommy Whittle (ex BBC Big Band tenor sax soloist).  They have backed the sensational Jazz flautist and sax player Kate Cuzner at Wolverton Manor In April.  In March 2006 they released their first CD ‘Our Kind of Jazz’ in aid of the IW Earl Mountbatten Hospice. All profit, a sum greater than £750, has been paid to the Hospice. The new Album by Nette Robinson  'Isn't It Romantic?' has now been released (there is only 1 left!)  The quality of the recording and musical content has already caused a stir.  A new Album using Peter Trueman's own compositions entitled 'Buckets and Spades' with guest stars Nette Robinson and Kate Cuzner is on sale at the Newport shops of Waterstones and IW County Press priced at £10 with all profits to the IW Mountbatten Hospice.  (In May a cheque for £320 was presented to them)  This may well be the jazz album of the year - don't miss it!   Click here to listen to clips -  Click here to listen to a few of our other clips.

They played  the first concert of the newly re-formed Newport Jazz Club at the Apollo Theatre, Newport in May 2010 with guest artists Nette Robinson (vocalist) and Charles Ross (trumpet) and will shortly be backing Alan Barnes in September.
